                        RHD7-IPS  RAIL TONG  "APPLICATION"

  • The RHD7-IPS (Rail Handling Device, 7 Ton Rated) is designed to handle today's long lengths of rail by means of lifting and/or dragging.
  • Rail Tongs may only be attached to a piece of equipment by suspending upon a swivel style hook to prevent twisting.
  • Rail to be lifted or dragged must not be restrained in any way by spikes, ice, joint bars or ballast.
  • Tongs are designed to open automatically when lowered onto head of rail.

                        RHD7-IPS  RAIL TONG  "INSPECTION"

  • Check the lifting link assembly to ensure that the oval links are all symmetrical and not deformed.
  • The maximum allowable wear on the lifting link assemblies' oval links shall not exceed more than 5% of their original diameter.
  • Ensure pivot pin is not worn or stretched by simply trying to spread the lifting end of Tongs (see figure 1).  If they can spread more than 1/2" discard* the Rail Tongs.
  • If there is more than 1/18" clearance between underside of bolt head and casting or underside of nut and casting (see figure 2), discard* the Rail Tongs.
  • The jaw area of the Tongs must be free of any deformation or dents.  If the bottom lip of the jaw is worn more than 5/16" (see figure 3) discard* the Rail Tongs.
  • There is to be no welding, heating or bending to the Rail Tong castings or their lifting link assemblies.

*NOTE:  Discarding of Rail Tong means to cut one or both tong castings in half.  Do not simply discard without destroying, someone could pick them up and use them.
